A Celebration of Marine Life and Coastal Culture

Every year, the Dana Point Festival of Whales brings together ocean lovers, marine conservationists, and coastal communities for a spectacular celebration of the annual gray whale migration. Held at Dana Point Harbor, this beloved festival offers a weekend full of whale watching, ocean education, live entertainment, and family-friendly activities. This year the festival will be taking place March 7-9th 2025
A Tradition Rooted in Marine Majesty
Dana Point is famously recognized as the Whale Watching Capital of the World, thanks to its prime location along the Pacific gray whale’s migration route. Each spring, thousands of these majestic creatures travel over 10,000 milesbetween their breeding grounds in Baja California and their feeding areas in Alaska. The Festival of Whales, now a long-standing tradition, honors this natural spectacle while also promoting ocean conservation and coastal appreciation.
Whale Watching & Ocean Adventures
One of the festival's highlights is the whale-watching excursions, where visitors embark on boat tours led by expert naturalists. Attendees can spot gray whales, humpbacks, dolphins, sea lions, and even the occasional orca. For those who prefer to stay on land, scenic viewpoints at Dana Point Headlands and the Harbor provide excellent opportunities to witness the migration.
Other ocean-related activities include kayak and paddleboard tours, offering a more intimate and eco-friendly way to experience the beauty of Dana Point’s coastal waters.
Community, Culture, and Conservation
Beyond the ocean, the festival embraces Dana Point’s coastal culture with a variety of events:
Parade & Street Fair – The festival kicks off with a lively Whale Parade, featuring themed floats, community groups, and marine conservation organizations. The Harbor Music & Art Festival showcases local musicians and artists, celebrating Southern California’s creative spirit.
Educational Exhibits & Talks – Scientists and marine biologists host interactive exhibits and presentations, educating festival-goers on whale migration, ocean conservation, and sustainable practices.
Sand Sculptures & Kids’ Activities – Families enjoy whale-themed sandcastle competitions, face painting, and storytelling sessions, making it a perfect event for all ages.
A Celebration with a Purpose
While the festival is a fun-filled experience, it also carries an important message: the preservation of marine life and ocean ecosystems. Proceeds from the event support local conservation efforts, and festival organizers emphasize eco-friendly practices, such as reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable tourism. The festival continues to be one of Southern California’s most cherished coastal traditions.
